I began showing dogs in 1987 in Obedience and Junior Showmanship. I started out with Cocker Spaniels, Shelties, and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. In 1993 I met Rhyl a Corgi. I have to blame Rhyl for really getting me hooked to the showdog scene. He finished his Utility obedience title, and also showed for me in Juniors. Because of this little Corgi clown I fell in love with the "Cowdog Mentality" It was only natural, then, that Melby (CH Graber Red Roo Of Melbourne, CGC, HIC, CD, QW) the Australian Cattle Dog should come along. I received Melby from a large dairy farm in southern Indiana. Melby quickly finished his CD, CH, and also showed with me in Juniors. Melby was a natural showman, and a valued companion, and even though he passed away at the young age of 7, he'll always remain an important part of our kennel.
Rosie (CH Firefly Code Name Red Roses, CGC, HIC, CD, CDX, U-CD, Can CD, asca CD, QW) is Firefly's first homebred Champion, and my best friend. Rosie has made me believe in the versatility of this breed. Oftentimes we would go directly from the breed ring to the obedience ring and do equally well in both, in fact she finished her CD and won Best Of Breed over specials for her first major within five minutes of each other.
In 2001 we were given two other great dogs, Summer (Willo-B's Parklake Dragonfly) and Reba (Tollegend Rebound Touchdown) They are Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, or Tollers for short. Reba died tragically in a car accident in 2005 and we will always miss her. Summer is living the semi retired life in Muncie, IN after finishing her CH.
At Firefly Kennels we believe in the versatility of the Australian Cattle Dog and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They are multi-talented breeds therefore our dogs are multi-titled. Firefly dogs can be successful in conformation, obedience, herding, field work, agility, tracking, handicap service, and especially as family companions.
